Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) and its subsidiary Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Vietnam-based VinEnergo Energy Joint Stock Co. The partnership aims to strengthen energy security, improve system reliability, and support the country’s shift toward cleaner energy sources.
Under the agreement, the parties will study multiple areas of cooperation including power generation, emerging energy technologies, and long-term system development. They plan to develop renewable energy solutions that can provide up to 5,000 megawatts (MW) of baseload-equivalent capacity, with potential total integrated capacity reaching around 25,000 MW when combining renewable energy and energy storage projects.
Aside from power projects, the collaboration will also explore electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for residential, commercial and fleet use to support wider adoption of EVs in the country.
Officials said the partnership follows the principle that energy security requires collaboration across different sectors. All future projects and investments will be evaluated separately and will be subject to additional agreements and regulatory approvals.
