Another Alex surnamed Diaz sets weightlifting world record

In Philippine weightlifting, the surname Diaz no longer opens doors. It breaks records.

Just when the world thought the Diaz story had reached its perfect ending with Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, another chapter arrived with an even louder bang.

This time, it was 15-year-old Alexsandra Ann Diaz who took center stage in Cali, Colombia and showed that greatness, apparently, is a family tradition.

Competing in the women’s 48-kilogram division at the 2026 World Youth Weightlifting Championships, the teenage sensation swept all three gold medals, outlifting nine rivals from around the world and leaving with two Youth World Records tucked into her luggage.

Her numbers were staggering. A 98-kilogram clean and jerk. A 175-kilogram total. Two world records. One unforgettable afternoon.

This was not merely a gold-medal performance. It was a declaration that Philippine weightlifting’s golden era is far from over.

With Hidilyn watching proudly from the sidelines, there was an undeniable sense of history in the making. Yet this was never about borrowing someone else’s spotlight.

Alexsandra did not win because she carries the Diaz name. She made the name shine even brighter.

Diaz also shares her nickname with 21-year-old Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala, whose dazzling Wimbledon run recently captured global headlines and set social media abuzz.

The younger Diaz’s triumph also tells a bigger story. For years, Philippine weightlifting was defined by one extraordinary athlete carrying an entire sport on her shoulders.

Today, it is producing champions who can stand on those same shoulders and see even farther.

The opening day offered another reminder of that growing depth. Fellow Filipino Jay-R Colonia captured gold in the men’s 56-kilogram clean and jerk, underscoring that the country’s weightlifting pipeline is growing stronger with every international competition.

There was a time when every world-class medal felt like a miracle. Now, the Philippines is producing record-breakers who make the extraordinary look almost routine.

The Diaz dynasty is thriving. More importantly, Philippine weightlifting has become much bigger than one family. But if history keeps repeating itself like this, don’t be surprised if another Diaz is already warming up behind the curtain.
