Aboitiz boosts Bohol Airport safety via specialized training

Aboitiz InfraCapital Bohol Airport Corp, (ABAC) is strengthening operational reliability at Bohol–Panglao International Airport by investing in internationally accredited technical training for personnel responsible for one of aviation’s most critical—but least visible—safety systems.

Twenty-five airport employees recently completed the five-day Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) training, equipping Airfield Lighting and Power Technicians and other airport personnel with advanced skills to operate, inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot the lighting systems that guide aircraft during takeoff, landing, and taxiing.

Conducted from June 29 to July 3, the program was delivered by the Manchester-based Airfield Training Company, an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)-accredited provider. Participants underwent specialized courses on airside electrical safety, preventive maintenance, fault diagnosis, and compliance with global aviation standards.

The training supports Bohol–Panglao International Airport’s compliance with standards set by the ICAO, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Those who pass the examinations will receive internationally recognized AGL1 and AGL2 certifications.

“For many visitors, Bohol–Panglao International Airport is their first impression of the island,” said ABAC General Manager Aldwin C. Uy. “Strengthening the capabilities of our technical teams helps us maintain the infrastructure that supports a seamless, dependable, and efficient travel experience.”

The initiative follows a similar capability-building program recently completed at Laguindingan International Airport, reflecting Aboitiz InfraCapital Airports’ broader strategy of raising technical standards across its expanding airport portfolio.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) supported the initiative through consultations, with Area 7 Manager Atty. Jinky Zaragosa-Ang underscoring the importance of continuous skills development as passenger traffic grows.

As Bohol’s main gateway, the airport plays a vital role in tourism and regional economic growth. By investing in technical expertise behind the scenes, ABAC aims to ensure safer, more reliable, and future-ready airport operations for airlines and travelers alike.
