The Philippines is strengthening its push to become a premier destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism, with the successful staging of the Tamiya Mini 4WD Asia Challenge (TMAC) 2026 highlighting the country’s ability to host international niche events that generate both tourism and business opportunities.
Held from June 26 to 28 at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, the three-day regional championship attracted around 200 elite Mini 4WD racers, officials, exhibitors, and hobbyists from 13 countries and territories, providing a boost to hotels, restaurants, transport operators, retailers, and other tourism-related businesses.
Beyond the competition, the event underscored the growing economic value of special-interest tourism, where visitors travel for a specific hobby or industry event but also spend on leisure, dining, shopping, and local attractions.
As part of the official program, the Department of Tourism treated Tamiya President Nobuhiro Tamiya and his delegation to a heritage tour of Intramuros, featuring iconic sites including San Agustin Church, Museo de San Agustin, and Casa Manila, giving participants a deeper appreciation of Philippine history and culture.
Tamiya said the Philippines possesses many of the qualities needed to host successful international events, pointing to its modern facilities, accessibility, and the hospitality of Filipinos that encourages visitors to return.
Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said TMAC 2026 demonstrates the growing role of niche MICE events in expanding the country’s tourism portfolio and creating wider economic opportunities.
“Events like TMAC encourage visitors to extend their stay, explore our destinations, and experience our culture, creating benefits that ripple across local businesses and communities,” she said.
The visit also highlighted Tamiya Inc.’s long-standing confidence in the Philippines. The Japanese company operates its only manufacturing facility outside Japan in Cebu and recently expanded its local operations through a P2-billion investment that generated 300 additional jobs.
The convergence of tourism and manufacturing sends a broader message to global investors. Successfully hosting international events not only showcases the country’s venues and hospitality but also reinforces its reputation as a reliable destination for investment, business partnerships, and specialized industries that extend well beyond traditional tourism.
