Birthday jokes shine brighter than solar panels today

Most people celebrate turning 80 with cake, candles and perhaps a quiet family gathering.

Manuel V. Pangilinan, more popularly known as MVP, marked the milestone by standing under the blazing Nueva Ecija sun at the inauguration of what is now the world’s largest operational integrated solar-and-battery facility on a single site, only to discover that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had a birthday surprise of his own.

President Marcos traded prepared remarks for playful banter, drawing laughter from guests as he welcomed the Metro Pacific Investments Corp. chairman to a rather exclusive club.

“You have officially made it into the Expanded Centenarians Act,” the President quipped. “I am happy to announce you will receive P10,000 from the government.”

The audience laughed before Marcos quickly revealed the punchline. The cash was merely symbolic, he said, “a simple, but I hope meaningful token of appreciation for the invaluable contributions to our nation that you have made throughout the years.”

Not content with one joke, the President delivered another, this time involving the First Lady.

“You must have special powers because you were able to convince the First Lady to join us,” Marcos teased, referring to Liza Araneta-Marcos’ presence at the ceremony. “If I need something from her, I will call you.”

The lighthearted exchange briefly shifted attention away from megawatts, batteries and investment figures, revealing a more personal side of an event otherwise dominated by energy statistics and infrastructure milestones.

Marcos then turned reflective, commending Pangilinan’s decades-long role in nation-building and noting that even on his birthday, the business leader chose to spend the day launching a project expected to power millions of Filipino homes.

“Even on your birthday, you found another opportunity to give back in many ways,” the President said.

For Pangilinan, it was an unconventional birthday celebration. There were no balloons in sight and no birthday song over the loudspeakers.

Instead, there was a solar farm, a presidential roast, and a reminder that sometimes the brightest gift is seeing a long-term vision finally switched on.
