Many aspiring business owners look far and wide for the next big concept, but some of the most promising opportunities lie right within familiar culture, traditions, and communities. This is the central theme of Grit Expectations, a new docuseries presented by Shopee Kultura+ and produced by FEATR, which traces the journeys of three homegrown Filipino enterprises that have turned distinctly local strengths into thriving online ventures. The series highlights how digital commerce allows these businesses to extend their reach across the nation, all while keeping their foundations firmly tied to the communities and heritage that define them.
For Shiela and Ken Reyes-Lao, founders of Cacao Culture, the journey began when they relocated from Manila to Davao and discovered the exceptional quality of Philippine cacao and the farming communities behind it. Rather than launching just another chocolate brand, they set out to help more Filipinos recognize and value their own native cacao. What started as a personal discovery grew into a platform that now supports over 20 local chocolate brands, shining a light on the country’s cacao growers and the expanding Philippine chocolate industry as a whole.
Organic Options, meanwhile, has spent more than 25 years working alongside over 300 smallholder farmers to make safe, nutritious food more widely available. Founded by Mike and Malou Melendres, the business offers everything from fresh organic produce to healthier varieties of rice, supporting agricultural communities while giving Filipino consumers better choices for their daily meals. Bringing their products online through Shopee has helped them reach households across the country, turning their long-held mission of accessible, healthy food into a reality for more people. “It’s creating an impact on the rice industry… continuing our goal of producing clean, safe, and healthy food,” Malou explains.
For Anilene Atanacio, founder of FilDogScarf, inspiration came from a deeply personal place: a family legacy of Filipiniana craftsmanship passed down through generations. With just 2,500 pesos in capital, she launched a business creating handmade apparel for pets, running every part of the operation entirely on Shopee. Her work reimagines traditional skills for a new audience, proving that heritage can grow and adapt without losing its essence. “I wanted to continue our family tradition, but in a way that felt new and truly mine,” Atanacio says.
Though each business took a different path, they all arrived at the same challenge: how to share something born from their community with people far beyond it. By leveraging the reach of e-commerce platforms, they have connected with customers across the Philippines without compromising the values and traditions that make their work unique. Their stories show that innovative, meaningful ideas do not always require starting from scratch. In a country abundant in local products, time-honored practices, and skilled communities, the most powerful opportunities may already be close at hand—and with the right digital support, those ideas can travel far and wide.
