PLDT Inc. said its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications Inc., is reviewing a National Telecommunications Commission order requiring corrective measures for mobile broadband performance issues in parts of Manila, Parañaque, and Pasig.
Smart received the NTC’s show-cause order on the evening of Sept. 28, two days after PLDT disclosed the regulator’s planned sanctions against mobile network operators.
The order, dated Sept. 24, directs Smart to undertake corrective measures, submit a corrective action plan, and respond to the regulator within 15 days.
PLDT said Smart is now reviewing the order and will comply with the response period set by the NTC. The company will also undertake the required corrective measures in the affected service areas as it works to address the findings from the regulator’s September mobile broadband performance validation.
The NTC order imposes a daily administrative fine of P100,000 starting from Smart’s receipt of the order. The penalty will continue until the regulator conducts a performance revalidation and verifies that the affected areas have met the applicable quality-of-service standards.
The action puts the immediate focus on Smart’s operational response, with the company needing to translate the regulator’s findings into a corrective plan and measurable improvements in service performance.
For PLDT, the next steps are therefore fairly concrete: review the findings, respond to the NTC within the prescribed 15-day window, implement corrective measures, and work toward clearing the regulator’s revalidation.
