Central banks must adopt for AI era— BSP chief

Central banks around the world must prepare to seize both the opportunities and navigate the challenges brought by artificial intelligence while upholding their key missions of keeping prices steady and financial systems secure.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli M. Remolona, Jr. made the point during the International Monetary Fund-World Bank Group Annual Meetings held October 12–18, 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

“Price stability remains the core mandate of central banks. As uncertainty grows and technology evolves rapidly, including AI, we need to consider a wider range of scenarios and think more strategically about the future of Southeast Asia,” Remolona said.

Headed by the Governor, the Philippine delegation highlighted that AI can help lift productivity, spark innovation, and bring more people into the formal financial system. At the same time, the officials emphasized the importance of investing in better digital infrastructure, upgrading people’s skills, and putting proper safeguards in place to manage potential risks.

For households and businesses alike, this means AI could eventually support more stable prices, faster and more affordable transactions, and broader access to financial services — provided the right rules and systems are in place. Stronger digital readiness also helps the economy adjust smoothly so families don’t face sudden cost spikes and companies can operate with more certainty.

The BSP delegation included Monetary Board Member Jose L. Querubin, Deputy Governor Zeno Ronald R. Abenoja, and Senior Assistant Governor Edna C. Villa. They held discussions with fellow central bank leaders, development partners, and investors on global and regional economic trends.

On a positive note during the meetings, Governor Remolona was honored with a plaque recognizing his “A-” rating in Global Finance magazine’s 2026 Central Banker Report Cards.
