The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Tuesday acknowledged working to restore power in Panay Island after multiple power plants tripped in the area.
NGCP said that as of 2:19 p.m. Tuesday, multiple power plants in Panay Island disconnected from the grid and isolated the area from the rest of the Visayan system.
It said as much as 302 megawatts was lost to the grid and comes on top of 150 MW from the planned maintenance shutdown of particular power plants.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 452 MW worth of electricity was unavailable as none of the power plants in the Island generated power.
NGCP said restoration works are ongoing with details provided for the public as soon as they become available.
Panay Island is the sixth largest in the Philippines, comprising of the province of Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Iloilo.
The Department of Energy (DOE), together with the affected distribution utilities and power generation plants, is closely coordinating with NGCP to put the system back on line.
The DOE added that the Energy Regulatory Commission is investigating the cause of the incident.
