Landslide at Davao de Oro gold mine limits operations

Listed mining firm, Apex Mining Co. Inc. said a landslide at Barangay Masara, Maco, Davao De Oro  Tuesday night has limited operations at the mines as rescue operations are underway.

But the company clarified the stricken area is outside its mine operations being used as a bus and jeepney terminal servicing employees, service providers and members of the community.

Apex Mining said Davao De Oro has been battered by heavy rains the last two weeks.

The company said it is “focused on fully supporting the rescue operations of the local government units by providing equipment, manpower and food supplies to affected residents, including our employees.

“Just before the landslide, there were four 60-seater buses and one 36-person capacity jeeps waiting for the outgoing employees. One bus had left for Mawab while the rest were still waiting when the landslide occurred, its debris covering the terminal,” it said.

As of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, 7 February, 62 Apex Mining employees have been accounted for and declarred safe.

Apex Mining continues to determine the whereabouts of 45 other employees.

Apex Mining operates the Maco gold mine in Davao de Oro.
