DOE urging Panay consumers to conserve power as supply falls below 400 MW

The Department of Energy (DOE) on Monday urged consumers in Panay Island to conserve energy while waiting for the completion of the transmission upgrade and maintenance works at Palm Concepcion Power Corporation’s coal-fired power plant.

The upgrade and maintenance are meant to strengthen the Panay grid with the completion of the Cebu-Negros-Panay transmission upgrade and the regular maintenance shutdown of the PCPC.

The DOE also urged the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to maintain grid stability and quickly recover from power interruption.

Panay Island is powered at the moment by four coal-fired power plants with total capacity of 451 megawatts and nine smaller diesel/bunker and renewables with another 220.3 MW.

It also draws 180 MW  from Negros through a submarine cable.

Energy supply at the moment is below 400 MW, the DOE said.
