The Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC) seeks to harness the power of rivers and has partnered with Turbulent NV in exploring the use of its hydroelectric technology.
Turbulent NV’s vortex turbines harness the energy of rivers and canals with minimal environmental impact.
According to the PNOC, the Belgium-based company has a proven record of delivering cost-effective, fish-friendly turbines resilient to natural debris and extreme weather conditions and has advanced monitoring capabilities.
“This collaboration with Turbulent represents a significant step forward in PNOC’s commitment to sustainable energy development. By leveraging Turbulent’s innovative hydroelectric technology, we aim to diversify our energy sources and contribute to a greener, more resilient future for the Philippines,” said Oliver Butalid, PNOC president, in a statement.
Frederik Ragé, Turbulent chief operating officer, said the agreement looks to drive sustainable development and renewable energy adoption in the Philippines and help provide affordable, reliable and environmentally friendly energy solutions for communities across the country.
Prior to this development, the PNOC also partnered with Windstream Energy Technologies India in a hybrid energy system marketed as a Solar Mill for deployment across small island communities across the country.
This, the PNOC said, aligns with the strategy of transitioning towards a social enterprise supporting the electrification goals of the national government.
The collaboration also supports the National Power Corporation’s Small Power Utility Group (SPUG) program in off-grid communities blending diesel-powered electricity with solar and wind power.
