Globe commits to 5G technology despite slow consumer adoption

Globe Telecom is committed to widening its 5G network across the country despite the slow adoption of the technology.

The technology relates to a new mobile network connecting machines, objects and devices at faster speeds than earlier broadcast standards. The relatively expensive cost of 5G-compatible devices contributes to the slower than projected adoption of the technology among commercial and household consumers.

But the Ayala-led telco said it deployed 27 new 5G sites across the Philippines in the first quarter of 2024 as part of its commitment to providing cutting-edge technology and superior connectivity to customers.

The rollout further boosts Globe’s 5G outdoor coverage or 98.35 percent in the National Capital Region (NCR) and 92.86 percent in key cities in the Visayas and Mindanao in the first three months this year.

The addition of new 5G sites has allowed Globe’s network to accommodate over six million 5G devices in March this year alone.

Nevertheless, Globe adopted a strategically moderated approach to spending on new 5G sites to take into account current market conditions and the ongoing search for viable use cases that fully leverage the potential of 5G technology.

This approach reflects the company’s commitment to advancing technology while ensuring sustainable and strategic deployment, the company said.

In addition to enhancing domestic coverage, Globe also strengthened its global presence by expanding its 5G partnerships and collaborating with 167 global partners in 87 destinations worldwide.

This network of partnerships ensures that Globe customers enjoy seamless 5G connectivity while traveling abroad, maintaining high-speed internet access and uninterrupted communication.

“We remain unwavering in our commitment to innovation and excellence in connectivity. We believe in unlocking new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike, driving economic growth, and improving quality of life,” Joel Agustin, Globe’s senior vice president and head of Network Planning and Engineering, said.

“Our strategic approach with 5G ensures that we not only lead in technology deployment but also provide our customers with unparalleled connectivity and seamless experiences both locally and internationally,” he added.

5G technology offers significantly faster internet speeds compared to its predecessors, allowing users to download large files, stream high-definition videos, and access cloud-based applications with minimal latency.

With 5G, multiple devices can connect to the network simultaneously without compromising speed or performance, which is particularly beneficial in densely populated areas and for IoT (Internet of Things) applications.
