New owners rehabilitate 350-MW thermal plant in Rizal

The proposed rehabilitation of the Malaya thermal power plant in Pililla, Rizal is scheduled for public scoping on Thursday this week, according to documents filed at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

Belgrove Power Corp., the new owners who won the power firm through a bidding process, eyes rehabilitating Unit 2 of the 350-megawatt (MW) oil-fired power unit and constructing a new 60-MW natural gas-fired power unit.

The other 300-MW oil-fired power unit is scheduled for decommissioning.

The EMB will conduct the scoping hearing to gather issues, concerns and other relevant information that will serve as basis for the preparation of the project’s environmental impact.

According to documents, the project is estimated to cost P3.80 billion. The construction of the gas turbine power plant is expected to be completed within the year and should start commercially operating by April next year.

Belgrove acquired the Malaya thermal power plant from the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. for P3.12 billion.
