    Cebu tourism gets ‘connectivity boost’

PLDT Inc. and its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications, Inc., have expanded their network coverage in Cebu, aiming to stimulate tourism and local livelihoods. The recent rollout of additional sites includes significant improvements in the municipality of Aloguinsan, which has benefited local tourism initiatives and small entrepreneurs.

Roderick S. Santiago, first vice president and deputy network head at PLDT and Smart, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing connectivity: “We continue to invest in enhancing our integrated fixed and wireless networks across the country to keep families connected and enable livelihoods.”

Rudney Carcuevas, president of the Bojo Aloguinsan Ecotourism Association (BAETAS), highlighted the transformative impact of improved connectivity on tourism operations. “Managing bookings is much easier, and we no longer need to visit remittance centers for down payments since we can already access mobile payments here,” Carcuevas said.

The BAETAS organization, which preserves the Bojo River—a United Nations-recognized ecotourism destination—has reported fewer tourist complaints related to communication issues since the new cell site became operational.

Smart’s ongoing network expansion across Cebu and the Visayas reflects its dedication to narrowing the digital divide and enhancing access to the internet for more Filipinos, thereby creating a positive impact in local communities through technology.
