PHIVOLCS raises Kanlaon Volcano alert to L3

The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Monday raised to Level 3 its alert on Kanlaon Volcano, indicating magmatic eruption has begun that could quickly progress to a more violent explosion. Local government units are advised to evacuate areas within a 6-km radius from the volcano’s summit, and to prepare for additional evacuation. The higher alert level was imposed after an eruption around 3:30 pm “produced a voluminous plume that rapidly rose to 3,000 meters above the vent.” During the eruption in early June, over 3,000 people were evacuated in areas surrounding the volcano.
