Philippines adds wetlands to Ramsar List, boosting conservation efforts

The Philippines has expanded its network of wetlands of international importance with the recent designation of the Sibugay Wetland Nature Reserve (SWNR) in Zamboanga Sibugay and the Del Carmen Mangrove Reserve (DCMR) in Siargao Island Protected Landscape and Seascape (SIPLAS). This brings the total number of Philippine wetlands recognized under the Ramsar Convention to ten.

The Ramsar Convention, an international treaty focused on the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, officially recognized SWNR and DCMR-SIPLAS for their vital environmental roles. These wetlands provide essential services, including flood control, carbon sequestration, food and water resources, as well as livelihood opportunities for local communities.

SWNR, located in Zamboanga Sibugay, hosts thousands of migratory birds from September to March and is home to the largest colony of flying foxes in the country. The reserve also protects endangered marine turtle species. Meanwhile, DCMR-SIPLAS, covering 4,871 hectares of mangroves in Siargao Island, supports a unique array of endemic flora and fauna. It is an important natural resource for food production, ecotourism, and storm surge protection.

The country’s newly added wetlands join other protected areas like the Tubbataha Reefs and Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, strengthening the country’s commitment to global environmental conservation.
