Yang family secures 20-year McDonald’s franchise extension

Golden Arches Development Corp., the exclusive operator of McDonald’s restaurants in the Philippines, has secured a significant vote of confidence from McDonald’s Corporation, as founder George Yang and his son, Kenneth Yang, were granted a fresh 20-year franchise term, extending their ownership until 2045. This renewed agreement highlights the Yang family’s strong relationship with McDonald’s and underscores their long-term commitment to the brand’s growth in the region.

As part of this renewed trust, Golden Arches is set to invest between P3 billion to P5 billion this year, with plans to open over 65 new stores, moving the company closer to its target of 1,000 locations within two years. The Philippines, with its rapidly expanding economy and growing consumer base, represents a key market for McDonald’s, and the Yang family is positioning itself to capitalize on this momentum.

Kenneth Yang, the president and CEO of Golden Arches Development Corp., expressed optimism about the company’s future, revealing plans to open the company’s 800th store by 2025. The company already boasts of 792 stores nationwide, following the opening of 65 new locations in 2024 alone—an all-time high for the company.

“We are committed to accelerating the growth of McDonald’s in the Philippines, particularly in rapidly developing areas outside Metro Manila,” said Yang. “In 2025, we aim to open 800 stores, and we will continue to expand both through company-owned stores and franchise partnerships.”

The expansion strategy focuses on underserved regions across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, where McDonald’s sees significant potential for growth. This will help bring the brand closer to more Filipinos, offering greater accessibility as these regions experience ongoing economic development.

The Yang family’s continued leadership has played a crucial role in McDonald’s Philippines’ success since 2005 when it became a 100 percent Filipino-owned entity, with the Yang family holding a majority stake. With the franchise renewal and ambitious expansion plans, the Yangs are poised to further solidify their dominance in the Philippine quick-service restaurant market.
