Globe Telecom Inc. said the appointment of Raymond Carl R. Cruz as its new president and chief executive officer, effective 22 April, was approved by shareholders during their annual stockholders’ meeting. Globe directors ratified Cruz’s appointment during its subsequent organizational meeting.
Cruz, who served as deputy CEO starting 1 January, brings over three decades of international leadership experience in both the telecommunications and consumer goods sectors. He previously served as CEO of Airtel Nigeria, the largest unit of Airtel Africa, where he oversaw operations generating more than USD2 billion in annual revenues. His corporate journey also includes leadership roles in Unilever across West Africa, Sri Lanka, India, and Southeast Asia.
Known for his ability to transform organizations and build high-performing teams, Cruz’s strategic acumen and deep industry insight are seen as strong assets for Globe as it navigates an increasingly digital and competitive telecom landscape.
The appointment also marks the transition of leadership from Ernest L. Cu, whose 15-year tenure has been widely credited for transforming Globe into the country’s leading digital solutions provider. Under Cu’s stewardship, Globe modernized its infrastructure, spearheaded innovations in digital services, and launched GCash—now the country’s leading fintech platform—catalyzing financial inclusion for millions of Filipinos.
Cu’s legacy includes steering Globe to outperform industry benchmarks, cementing its position as the Philippines’ most preferred mobile brand. He was recognized with numerous accolades, including FinanceAsia’s Best CEO for the Philippines in 2010 and 2017.
Cruz now takes the helm at a pivotal time, as Globe continues its evolution from telco to full-fledged digital solutions platform.
