    Hajji Alejandro passes away at 70

    Hajji Alejandro, a major pop star in the 1970s and 1980s and more popularly known as “Kilabot ng mga Kolehiyala,” is no more. He died at age 70.

    Born Angelito Alejandro on December 26, 1954, the veteran of Original Pilipino Music has been suffering from colon cancer.

    His family issued a statement confirming the singer’s death. “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Son, Angelito ‘Hajji’ T. Alejandro. At this time, we kindly ask for privacy as our family grieves this tremendous loss,” the statement read.

    Alejandro was the first winner of the Metro Manila Popular Music Festival, with the song “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika” besting Freddie Aguilar’s global hit “Anak.” Alejandro was a member of the popular group the Circus Band.

    Alejandro is survived by four children: theater actress-singer Rachel Alejandro and chef Barni Alejandro from his first marriage; Mojofly drummer Ali Alejandro, his son with the late beauty queen Rio Diaz; and Michelle Alejandro.
