Alliance fights LTFRB order threatening 14,000 riders

The Motorcycle Taxi Community Alliance of the Philippines is urging transport regulators to reverse an order that threatens to suspend operations of motorcycle taxi firm Move It in major Philippine cities, citing devastating effects on thousands of riders and commuters.

In a letter to Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) chairman Teofilo Guadiz, Alliance head honcho Romeo Malungsod appealed for a review of the LTFRB’s directive to halt Move It’s onboarding of new riders for a year and reduce its fleet to 6,836 units—based on a 2020 press release.

“This order endangers the livelihood of 14,000 riders nationwide,” Malungsod said, adding that many depend solely on motorcycle taxi income to support their families. He criticized the lack of consultation and warned the move would also negatively impact commuters who rely on these services daily.

Move It has filed a motion for reconsideration, calling the penalty “ultra vires” as it is based on a press statement, not a formal rule or law.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has temporarily suspended the LTFRB order while the appeal is under review. Malungsod urged the Motorcycle Taxi Technical Working Group (TWG) to act swiftly and fairly, emphasizing the industry’s willingness to cooperate.

The TWG is chaired by the head of the LTFRB.
