Healthcare facilities to get energy makeover under new deal

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Health (DOH) have signed a memorandum of agreement to enhance energy efficiency in public health facilities, the agencies announced Thursday. The initiative aims to reduce energy consumption and operational costs in government-run healthcare buildings through the use of energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy solutions.

The agreement, signed by DOE officer-in-charge Sharon Garin and DOH secretary Teodoro Herbosa, aligns with the Government Energy Management Program, which mandates a 10 percent cut in electricity and fuel use across all government buildings.

“This is not just about reducing bills,” Garin said, emphasizing the policy’s broader goal of building a sustainable and resilient healthcare infrastructure.

Under the partnership, the DOE will provide technical assistance, energy audits, and free installation of efficient systems, while the DOH will appoint coordinators to oversee the program’s rollout in its facilities.

This collaboration follows similar DOE initiatives with local governments, including a recent energy efficiency agreement with the Provincial Government of Siquijor signed in June.
