Food costs top public concerns in new survey

A recent nationwide survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) revealed that a majority of Filipinos (56 percent) want President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to prioritize lowering the price of rice and other food products, highlighting persistent economic concerns.

Commissioned by the Stratbase Group and conducted from September 24 to 30, 2025, the survey polled 1,500 respondents nationwide, with a ±3 percent margin of error. The results showed inflation, particularly the cost of basic food items, as the top issue Filipinos believe the government should urgently address.

Concerns over food prices were most pronounced in the Visayas and Mindanao (both at 61 percent), and slightly more prevalent in rural areas (57 percent) than in urban centers (54 percent), reflecting the disproportionate impact of inflation on poorer communities.

Corruption emerged as the second most pressing issue, with 31 percent of respondents citing it as a key concern—particularly in Metro Manila (45 percent). The findings suggest a strong public call for both economic relief and transparent governance.

“This survey highlights the urgent reality that Filipinos are still struggling to afford basic food,” said Stratbase Group president Prof. Victor Andres “Dindo” Manhit. “Filipinos are sending a strong message: address inflation and ensure food security, while also strengthening accountability in government spending.”

Other concerns cited by respondents included education (7 percent) and healthcare (4 percent). The survey underscores a growing public demand for responsive leadership focused on both economic stability and clean governance.
