Meat imports rise 13.5% as local production struggles to meet demand

Meat imports into the Philippines climbed 13.5 percent in the first nine months of 2025, reaching 1.18 billion kilograms, up from 1.04 billion kilograms in the same period last year, according to data from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI).

Pork remained the top imported meat, making up 53.4 percent of total imports at 632.99 million kilograms, a 22.2 percent increase from 2024. Chicken followed at 368.08 million kilograms or 31.1 percent of the total, up 6.4 percent year on year.

Beef imports rose 4.3 percent to 150.15 million kilograms, while buffalo meat imports grew 5.8 percent to 32.14 million kilograms. Lamb and duck imports also increased—by 13.4 percent and 35.1 percent, respectively—while turkey imports plunged 90.6 percent to just over 102,000 kilograms.

Brazil remained the country’s largest meat supplier, accounting for 39.1 percent or 463.25 million kilograms of total imports during the period.

The rise in import volumes reflects continued demand for affordable meat options as local production struggles to meet consumption needs.
