Gov’t shelves fare hike as calamity-hit regions oppose

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Sunday ruled out the jeepney fare hikes, warning that higher fares could push up consumer prices over the next two years.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the timing is “not appropriate,” noting that many provinces are still recovering from recent earthquakes and typhoons. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) added that at least five major regions—including Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Bicol, and Central Visayas—oppose the increase.

LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza said consultations show even transport groups are hesitant, while a study by the Department of Economy, Planning and Development found that a ₱1–₱2 fare hike could raise inflation.

Lopez said fare increases would burden both commuters and transport operators, as higher transport costs tend to push up prices of basic goods.

The DOTr and LTFRB said they are exploring other ways to support drivers and operators, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to find balanced solutions.

One key measure is a stricter campaign against colorum vehicles. The agencies will form an Anti-Colorum Task Force with the DOJ and PAOCC to target illegal operators, noting that colorum activities reportedly take up to 30 percent of the daily income of legitimate drivers.

Officials urged colorum operators to legalize their operations, citing 17,000 available TNVS slots. Lopez warned that enforcement will intensify, while Mendoza encouraged drivers to apply, saying the process will be “fair and fast.”
