DTI, PLDT–Smart push digital inclusion for MSMEs

The Department of Trade and Industry has renewed its push for digital inclusion, sealing a fresh partnership with PLDT and Smart Communications to accelerate the digital transformation of Philippine micro, small and medium enterprises.

The renewed commitment was formalized during PLDT–Smart Communities Day on January 14, 2026, bringing together government agencies and industry players aligned with the administration’s drive to modernize the economy and expand inclusive growth through technology.

At the core of the collaboration are upskilling programs aimed at helping MSMEs thrive in a digital-first marketplace. These include foundational digital literacy, practical guidance on online marketplaces, and hands-on training in digital payments to streamline operations and improve cash flow.

More advanced modules will introduce MSMEs to artificial intelligence tools, cybersecurity practices, and data-driven approaches that can boost productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness amid fast-changing consumer behavior.

Beyond business growth, the partnership also puts a strong focus on community safety.

Consumer-oriented sessions will tackle internet security, covering protection against online scams, credit card fraud, and identity theft, while teaching users how to secure social media accounts from hacking and misuse.

DTI said the partnership with PLDT–Smart is critical to strengthening MSMEs, which Philippine Statistics Authority data show make up about 99.5 percent of registered enterprises and generate more than 60 percent of total employment nationwide.

Anchored on the MSME Development Plan 2023–2028 and the Philippine Development Plan, the collaboration advances practical initiatives on connectivity, e-commerce onboarding, digital payments, cybersecurity awareness, and continuous digital skills training—positioning MSMEs to compete confidently in the country’s fast-evolving digital economy.

Officials said the renewed pact underscores public-private collaboration as a catalyst for resilient, inclusive growth, job creation, and long-term competitiveness across regional and rural markets nationwide.
