DOTr opens Aleson routes to other ships to keep sea travel safe

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has ordered the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to allow other safety-compliant shipping companies to operate on routes usually served by Aleson Shipping Lines, to make sure passengers can continue traveling safely by sea.

The move follows President’s directive after the sinking of Aleson’s MV Trisha Kerstin 3 last Monday. Aleson’s operations are currently suspended while the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and MARINA conduct a full safety audit and inspection of its vessels.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the President made it clear that passenger safety must come first, but travel should not be disrupted while the investigation is ongoing.

MARINA will issue special permits to other qualified ships on key Aleson routes, including trips from Zamboanga City to Isabela City, Lamitan City, Siasi and Jolo in Sulu, and Bongao in Tawi-Tawi. Also covered are the Pulauan–Dapitan City–Dumaguete City route and the Dumaguete City–Siquijor/Larena route. Most of these routes already have operating vessels, except those serving Lamitan and Bongao.

If there are not enough commercial ships, the PCG said it is ready to step in. The Coast Guard will use its 44-meter vessels to provide free rides for affected passengers.

Meanwhile, search and rescue operations continue in the waters off Basilan, with the PCG deploying technical divers and remotely operated vehicles. Authorities said 316 people have been rescued, 18 have died, and 10 remain missing.

MARINA has also set up help desks at Aleson Shipping Lines to assist victims and help them quickly claim insurance.
