Meralco partners with Aclara to expand smart meter rollout for consumers

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has partnered with Aclara Meters Philippines, a subsidiary of Hubbell Inc., to deploy over 72,000 smart electricity meters across its service area starting this year. The move is part of Meralco’s broader effort to modernize operations and improve service reliability.

Smart meters provide real-time energy monitoring, remote reading, and faster outage detection. They allow households and businesses to manage electricity use more efficiently, support remote connection or disconnection, and contribute to smarter grid management.

The deployment forms part of Meralco’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Program, which aims to roll out around 12 million smart meters over the next decade. Currently, about 196,000 smart meters are already in use.

Meralco executives said the meters will support the company’s upcoming Grid-Edge Operations and Control Center (GEOCC), which will help adapt the grid to evolving energy needs, including electric vehicles, residential batteries, and distributed energy resources.

“The partnership strengthens our journey toward digital transformation, placing smart metering at the center of reliable service and customer energy management,” said Meralco executives, emphasizing that smart meters enable transparency, efficiency, and innovation for consumers.
