70,000 fingerlings released at La Mesa Ecopark to help restore waterways

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – National Capital Region (BFAR-NCR), together with the Manila Water Foundation (MWF), released 70,000 fingerlings at the spillway of La Mesa Ecopark in Quezon City.

The activity was part of MWF’s 21st anniversary celebration and supports BFAR’s Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa (BASIL) Program. The BASIL Program aims to bring life back to rivers and lakes and encourage communities to help keep waterways clean and healthy.

Before the release, BFAR specialists checked the spillway to make sure the water quality and environment were suitable for the young fish. The assessment showed the area can support healthy fish growth.

Officials from BFAR-NCR and Manila Water Foundation attended the event. During a short learning session, participants were reminded about the importance of understanding fish life cycles and protecting biodiversity. The fingerlings are expected to mature in about four months, which may also support future recreational fishing activities in the park.

The dispersal helps improve the ecological balance of the area. Healthy fish populations can support cleaner and more stable water systems. The tributaries around La Mesa Dam play an important role in maintaining the quality of water supplied to the East Zone of Metro Manila.

Organizers said the activity highlights the continued partnership between BFAR-NCR and Manila Water Foundation in protecting waterways, strengthening biodiversity, and encouraging public participation in environmental conservation.
