MRT-3 tightens cleaning protocols after cockroach sighting in train

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has ordered stronger, disinfection, and pest control measures across the Manila Metro Rail Transit System Line 3 (MRT-3) after a passenger reported seeing a cockroach inside a train car on social media.

According to MRT-3, the train involved was immediately inspected and disinfected by the maintenance team to ensure cleanliness and safety for passengers.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez directed MRT-3 General Manager Michael Capati to investigate the incident and address the issue right away.

Capati also issued a Notice to Explain to the rail system’s maintenance contractor, Sumitomo Corporation, to determine accountability for the lapse in cleanliness standards.

MRT-3 said regular cleaning and inspections are already part of its maintenance program with Sumitomo, but sanitation efforts will now be intensified.

Officials said the move aims to strengthen cleanliness monitoring and ensure safer, more hygienic train rides for the riding public.
