The Department of Transportation (DOTr) expects to finish Section 2A of the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3 by 2027, creating a key connection between the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), and the existing Metro Manila Skyway System.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon, and Toll Regulatory Board Executive Director Jay Art Tugade inspected the construction site on Wednesday to check progress on the connector project.
The new 1.2-kilometer elevated interconnection structure will have two lanes in each direction. It is designed to make travel between northern and southern Metro Manila much faster and provide another route for motorists and trucks.
Officials said the project follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to reduce travel time and fuel consumption by easing traffic congestion.
Once completed, travel time from Skyway–Buendia to NLEX Karuhatan is expected to drop from about two hours to 25–30 minutes. The trip from Skyway–Buendia to the Manila Port Area may take 20–25 minutes.
The connector is also expected to help reduce traffic on major roads such as Radial Road 10, España Boulevard, and Araneta Avenue, especially by providing an alternative route for trucks.
The project had been delayed for six years mainly due to right-of-way issues. Construction is now moving forward after the government and private partner San Miguel Corporation, led by businessman Ramon Ang, helped resolve land acquisition problems.
The DOTr estimates the connector will benefit about 30,000 vehicles daily once it opens in 2027, improving the flow of traffic between North and South Luzon and making expressway travel across Metro Manila more efficient.
