The Department of Energy (DOE) on Wednesday announced the installation of three transformers at the Calangatan Switching Station in Oriental Mindoro to improve electricity service on the island.
The upgrade allows the full output of a 16.53-megawatt wind power facility operated by Philippines Hybrid Energy Systems Inc. to be delivered to the grid. Previously, the plant could not supply its full capacity even when wind conditions were strong.
The project was completed through coordination among several groups, including the National Transmission Corp., National Power Corp., Ormin Power Inc., and the Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative. No cost details were disclosed.
The wind facility also uses a battery energy storage system to help stabilize power supply.
The DOE said the improvement will reduce dependence on more expensive conventional power sources and provide more reliable electricity to consumers in Oriental Mindoro.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said strengthening grid infrastructure is key to maximizing renewable energy and improving the country’s power supply. The DOE added that similar projects may be implemented in other areas through cooperation between government and private partners.
