Maynilad expands “new water” program to boost supply

The Maynilad Water Services Inc. is stepping up efforts to expand its “New Water” program to ensure a more reliable and climate-resilient water supply.

The company said Tuesday that “new water” refers to potable water produced from treated wastewater or sewage, which undergoes advanced purification processes.

A key facility, the Valenzuela Modular Treatment Plant, is currently on standby and can be activated during supply disruptions or maintenance of main water sources. Once operational, it can produce up to 1 million liters per day and supply select areas in Barangay Marulas, Valenzuela City.

Maynilad assured the public that the recycled water passes strict treatment stages, including ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and disinfection, meeting national drinking water standards.

The company first introduced potable water reuse at its Parañaque treatment plant, the first of its kind in the country. It is also set to open a new facility in Pasay City within the year, which will have a capacity of 12 million liters per day.

Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito Fernandez said developing alternative water sources is crucial as demand rises and climate change affects traditional supplies.

The new water program is part of the company’s broader plan to improve water reliability, sustainability, and responsible resource management across its service areas, which include Metro Manila and parts of Cavite.
