The Philippines and Norway have agreed to expand cooperation in maritime safety, digitalization, and environmental efforts following talks between the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA).
One key outcome is a plan for possible technical support from Norway to help analyze maritime incidents using data, with the goal of improving safety measures. The two sides also aim to share best practices in adopting a risk-based ship inspection system.
On environmental efforts, both countries discussed options to cut emissions, including electrifying short-distance domestic shipping and supporting global decarbonization goals.
In digitalization, MARINA administrator Sonia Malaluan said existing cooperation on recognizing seafarer certifications could help boost the deployment of Filipino seafarers. She also highlighted plans to improve system integration through an API, including possible links with MARINA’s online seafarer management system.
The two agencies also identified ways to improve seafarer skills and welfare through training and knowledge-sharing programs.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to turn these discussions into concrete projects and continue long-term technical cooperation.
