Metro Pacific Water ramps up capex for El Niño

Metro Pacific Water (MPW) has earmarked P3.81 billion in capital expenditures for 2026 to fund key infrastructure upgrades in Iloilo City and Dumaguete City, as it moves to strengthen water supply reliability ahead of expected El Niño conditions.

MPW president and CEO Andrew Pangilinan said the investments are aimed at addressing rising demand while mitigating the impact of climate-related pressures on traditional water sources.

“We recognize that demand continues to grow at a time when traditional water sources are becoming increasingly strained due to extreme climate conditions. These investments are being made today so our customers will not have to bear the burden of shortages tomorrow,” Pangilinan said.

The capital program includes the installation of new pipelines, replacement of aging and undersized pipes, and the addition of 86,073 new service connections to expand household access. The company is also rolling out non-revenue water reduction measures to curb system losses from leaks and illegal connections.

MPW is likewise accelerating alternative water source projects to enhance supply resilience. These include desalination facilities with a combined capacity of up to 65 million liters per day, as well as modular treatment plants capable of producing 5 million liters per day from local sources.

“Through these strategic investments, we are strengthening system reliability and safeguarding access to clean water even as the El Niño season approaches,” Pangilinan added.

MPW currently serves around 860,000 residents across Iloilo City, Dumaguete City, and seven municipalities within its franchise areas.
