The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said Monday that all airports in Eastern Samar and nearby areas remain open and safe after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake on May 4.
Airports assessed include Calbayog, Borongan, Catbalogan, Hilongos, Catarman, Guiuan, and Ormoc. No structural damage was reported. However, Borongan Airport is currently without power and waiting for electricity to be restored.
After the quake, CAAP sent rescue, fire, and security teams to inspect airport facilities and ensure safety.
CAAP director general Raul del Rosario said all necessary measures have been taken to protect passengers and staff. He added that airport managers are continuing to monitor conditions and address any issues.
CAAP is also coordinating with local governments, following instructions from Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, to keep airport operations safe and normal.
