AI shift moves from adoption to capability building

Filipino companies are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence (AI), with 86 percent of knowledge workers already using generative AI in daily tasks, according to industry leaders. Experts said the next challenge is helping businesses build the skills, systems, and strategies needed to scale AI effectively.

Jerome Zapata, HR director of Kickstart Ventures, said lasting AI transformation depends on combining operational knowledge with creativity to drive smarter adoption.

Meanwhile, Sprout Solutions reported strong growth in AI use among Philippine companies. Its monthly active AI users surged from around 2,000 last year to more than 35,000, reflecting the rapid integration of AI into workplace operations.

Sprout Solutions chief technology officer Gian dela Rama said teams using generative AI saw productivity improve by 15 percent to 30 percent. One payroll services team reduced workflow tasks by up to 75 percent and doubled client-handling capacity through agentic AI.

Industry leaders emphasized that AI is not replacing workers but changing how they work. As AI handles repetitive tasks, employees are expected to focus more on decision-making, strategy, and higher-value responsibilities.

BagoSphere co-founder Ellwyn Tan said successful AI adoption depends not only on technology but also on workers’ ability to adapt and remain grounded in their values and judgment during change.

Companies and workforce development groups are now pushing for stronger training programs and collaboration to prepare workers for AI-driven workplaces. BagoSphere said it has trained more than 16,000 alumni and achieved an 80 percent employment rate within 90 days for graduates of its BPO fellowship program.

Experts warned that organizations that fail to turn AI adoption into long-term capability risk falling behind as AI continues reshaping industries.
