Philippine employers confront shocks at ECOP forum

Employers in the Philippines are preparing for an increasingly volatile business landscape as geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, rising energy costs, and rapid technological change converge, issues that are set to take center stage at the 47th National Conference of Employers (NCE47) of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, opening May 20, 2026 at The Manila Hotel.

With the theme “Towards a Dynamic, Resilient, and Sustainable Future,” the annual gathering will bring together leaders from government, business, academe, and labor to explore how enterprises can stay competitive amid overlapping global and domestic disruptions.

ECOP president Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr. said employers must shift from reacting to crises toward actively building resilience.

“The challenges we face today are no longer isolated—they are interconnected and evolving. Employers must not only respond to disruptions, but take a more active role in strengthening resilience,” he said.

Conference discussions will center on three major forces reshaping work and enterprise: artificial intelligence and evolving job requirements, the expansion of platform and flexible work arrangements, and business strategies for navigating global volatility.

Sessions on AI will examine how automation is reshaping roles, accelerating demand for reskilling and lifelong learning, while also raising concerns over displacement and widening skills gaps.

Another panel will focus on the platform economy, including worker classification, social protection, and fair labor standards in non-traditional work setups.

A third track will address how firms are managing inflationary pressures, geopolitical risks, and increasing sustainability expectations amid uncertain global conditions.

NCE47 organizing committee chair Enunina V. Mangio said the conference aims to turn shared challenges into practical collaboration across sectors, noting that economies are now facing “overlapping disruptions from economic shocks to technological and climate transitions.”

Program chair Ernie Cecilia added that global experts will benchmark international best practices to help Philippine employers adapt more quickly to rapid change.

ECOP said the conference underscores growing urgency for stronger coordination among social partners as businesses seek to remain adaptive, competitive, and resilient in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
