Manila Water’s Upper Wawa Dam named Global Water Project of the Year

East Zone concessionaire Manila Water announced its Upper Wawa Dam has won Water Project of the Year at the 2026 Global Water Awards, held in Madrid, Spain alongside the Global Water Summit.

Organized by Global Water Intelligence, the prestigious awards honor outstanding achievements in water management, technology, and sustainability worldwide. The dam was recognized for its strategic importance, top-tier engineering, and role in building climate resilience.

A key project for Metro Manila and nearby areas, Upper Wawa Dam is the largest local water supply development in 50 years—since Angat Dam was finished in 1967. It delivers 710 million liters of water daily, diversifies supply sources, eases pressure on Angat Dam, and keeps up with rising demand from population growth. It also helps control floods in Rizal and Marikina City by holding excess rainwater.

Manila Water president and CEO Roberto Locsin called the dam “a lifeline” that supports growth, disaster readiness, and reliable service. The win places Manila Water among the world’s leading water solutions providers, and marks the project as a model for sustainable infrastructure in developing economies.

The company said it will keep developing innovative ways to deliver safe, steady water supply to its customers.
