Pinoy roots add spice to NBA Finals

For Filipino basketball fans, the 2026 NBA Finals come with an irresistible bonus: no matter who wins, a little piece of the Philippines gets a championship ring.

When the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks collide beginning June 3 (June 4, Thursday in Manila), the spotlight will not shine solely on the Larry O’Brien Trophy. It will also fall on two players whose family trees stretch across the Pacific.

The better-known name is Jordan Clarkson, the former Gilas Pilipinas star whose roots trace back to Pampanga. Across the court will be rookie sensation Dylan Harper, whose mother, Maria Pizarro Harper, was born and raised in Dinalupihan, Bataan.

Both have openly embraced their Filipino heritage. Clarkson strengthened that bond by suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas in international competition, while Harper has repeatedly spoken about the pride he takes in his roots. In a recent interview, the Spurs rookie called it “a blessing to represent the Philippines…where I’m from,” adding that he and Clarkson “do a great job of doing that.”

For Filipino fans, it is the closest thing the NBA has offered to a barangay rivalry on basketball’s grandest stage.

Of course, the Finals’ biggest attraction may be the basketball unicorn wearing silver and black. At 7-foot-4, Victor Wembanyama looks like he was assembled in a laboratory after scientists were asked to build the perfect basketball player. He protects the rim like a veteran center, handles the ball like a guard, and launches three-pointers with alarming ease. Opponents who venture into the paint often leave with their shot blocked and their confidence dented.

The Spurs, champions most recently in 2014, arrive as favorites after dispatching the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Wembanyama, Harper, and Stephon Castle have turned San Antonio into the NBA’s newest basketball machine.

The Knicks bring a different storyline: hunger. Their last championship came in 1973, when disco was fashionable, and none of their current players existed. Behind Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Clarkson, New York is chasing a title that generations of fans have only heard about from parents and grandparents.

One team seeks a new dynasty. The other seeks redemption after half a century.

For Filipinos, however, the equation is simpler. Whether it is Clarkson or Harper, somebody with Filipino blood will be celebrating when the confetti falls. And that gives these Finals a distinctly Pinoy flavor.
