PAL names new independent directors to boost growth strategy

The Philippine Airlines (PAL) announced on Tuesday the appointment of corporate leader Edgar O. Chua and seasoned aviation executive Datuk Captain Izham Ismail as independent directors, effective June 1, 2026. This move forms part of the flag carrier’s long-term transformation and growth plans, aimed at strengthening its board expertise and governance.

Chua brings decades of experience in corporate strategy, governance, and sustainability, having held senior roles across energy, banking, and technology sectors—including his tenure as country chairman of Shell Companies in the Philippines. Ismail, with over 40 years in the industry, previously led Malaysia Aviation Group as managing director and began his career in 1979 as a cadet pilot at the PAL Aviation School.

Chairman Lucio C. Tan noted their combined experience will be vital as PAL modernizes its fleet, expands its global network, and builds stronger international partnerships. The airline currently flies to 29 domestic and 40 international destinations from Manila and Cebu hubs.

The appointments bring world-class business and aviation expertise to PAL’s leadership, supporting its goals to improve operations, expand reach, and ensure sustainable growth amid industry competition.
