France upgrades A400M transport plane

Airbus Defence and Space has secured a contract to develop new multi‑mission features for France’s A400M military transport aircraft, working with the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) and French defense authorities.

Known as the Parallel Mission System (PMS), the upgrade adds intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) tools, plus tactical command‑and‑control ability. Changes include new onboard mission software, situational‑awareness stations in the cargo bay, and an advanced optical sensor. The plane will also control extra sensors, communications gear, drones, and missiles deployed from its hold, while coordinating operations with ground troops, helicopters—including the Caracal H225M helicopter that the Philippines operates—and fighter jets.

First fit‑out happens in 2027, with flight testing in 2028; more French aircraft will be updated later. Airbus is also looking at future upgrades: long‑range electronic jamming, drone/missile “mothership” role, 40‑tonne payload capacity, and firefighting capability.
