A recent study and industry forum highlight obesity as a major health and economic challenge in the Philippines. Organized by Novo Nordisk Philippines and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, the “Healthy Workforce, Stronger Business” forum presented findings from the EpiCOb-PH study — one of the country’s most detailed assessments of obesity’s impact.
The study shows that around 29 million Filipino adults, or 41 percent of the adult population, are overweight or obese. This number is projected to rise to 44.8 million by 2040. The condition carries an estimated annual economic cost of ₱1.9 trillion: ₱551 billion in direct medical expenses and ₱1.17 trillion in lost productivity.
Experts say obesity raises risks of diabetes, heart disease, and kidney problems, leading to higher absenteeism, lower work performance, and increased healthcare spending. The forum brought together business leaders, doctors, and policymakers to discuss solutions, including workplace wellness programs, lifestyle changes, and expanded medical treatments such as GLP-1 therapies.
Speakers emphasized that addressing obesity requires teamwork between employers, health providers, and government. Taking action now can improve employee well-being, reduce costs, and build a stronger, more productive workforce.
