First Gen volunteers conduct coastal cleanup at Freedom Island for Month of the Ocean

Leading renewable energy producer First Gen Corporation organized a coastal cleanup activity on May 30, 2026, at Freedom Island within the Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park in Metro Manila. The initiative was held as part of the Philippines’ Month of the Ocean celebration, mandated under Presidential Proclamation No. 57, series of 1998.

Coordinated through the company’s Employee POWER program and in partnership with Communities Organized for Resource Allocation (CORA), the activity gathered employees, their dependents, and members of the broader Lopez Group community. It was also supported by First Gen’s Create for the Climate program.

Freedom Island is recognized as one of Metro Manila’s remaining important coastal ecosystems. Its mangroves, mudflats, and coastal habitats serve as shelter for marine life and migratory birds, while also acting as natural protection against flooding and storm surges for nearby communities.

Over 63 volunteers took part in the drive, collecting a total of 248.8 kilograms of marine litter from the shoreline. Beyond waste removal, the activity aimed to increase participants’ understanding of how healthy coastal environments support biodiversity and strengthen climate resilience.

“True environmental stewardship moves beyond awareness into meaningful action. Through efforts like this, we enjoin our employees, communities, and other stakeholders to safeguard the essential ecosystems that sustain us,” said First Gen vice president Shirley Cruz.

The activity reinforces First Gen’s commitment to environmental protection. As a top renewable energy provider in the country, the company operates 1,764 megawatts of clean energy capacity across geothermal, hydro, wind, solar, and battery storage systems, supplying around one-third of the Philippines’ total renewable electricity. Through programs such as EmPOWER and Create for the Climate, First Gen continues to enable employees and communities to contribute to sustainable development and a just energy transition.

The event also served as a lead-up to Philippine Environment Month in June, where the Lopez Group holds its annual Lopez Envi Festival.
