Globe backs DepEd’s new school gadget policy; pushes for balanced, safe digital learning

Globe Telecom has expressed full support for the Department of Education’s latest guidelines governing the use of gadgets in schools, emphasizing that technology should be both accessible and safe for Filipino learners.

Under DepEd Order No. 006, Series of 2026 – or the Guidelines on Ensuring Safe and Motivating Learning Environment – devices are generally restricted during class hours but may be used for educational activities or emergencies. Globe said this framework strikes the right balance between regulation and opportunity amid rapid advances in digital tools and artificial intelligence.

The company stressed that protecting children online must go hand-in-hand with building their skills for the future. It advocates for stronger platform safeguards, clear parental guidance, and widespread digital literacy to help young people use technology responsibly.

“Every Filipino child deserves to learn and thrive in a digital world that is safe by design,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe chief sustainability and corporate communications officer. “We aim to give students access to technology alongside the knowledge to be responsible online. In this age of AI and digital learning, connectivity opens doors to education, innovation, and equal opportunities.”

Globe noted the policy aligns with United Nations principles on children’s rights in the digital space, as well as recommendations from UNICEF, the OECD, and the Philippine Child Rights Network. All groups agree that safety measures work best when paired with education and shared responsibility among government, schools, families, and tech firms.

To put this into practice, Globe runs the Digital Thumbprint Program, which has reached over 2 million students since 2016 to teach digital citizenship and cyber wellness. It also runs the #MakeITSafePH campaign, provides an Online Safety Glossary, and works with authorities and partners to fight online child abuse and exploitation.

Moving forward, Globe said it will continue collaborating across sectors to build a safer digital ecosystem – one that lets young Filipinos explore, learn, and grow without unnecessary risk.
