Smart Communications and partner Nokia have completed the first live demonstration of local breakout roaming technology in Southeast Asia, delivering faster and smoother data use for Filipinos traveling abroad. Tested earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the system routes data through the nearest local hub instead of sending it all the way back to the Philippines, cutting lag and speeding up browsing and app performance. Built on Nokia’s cloud-based roaming solution, it lets Smart keep full control of customer accounts and policies while giving users a local-like connection experience. PLDT and Smart network head Menardo Jimenez noted the innovation forms part of ongoing efforts to serve Filipinos anywhere, while Nokia’s Asia-Pacific core software chief Henrique Vale said the partnership marks key progress in global connectivity.
