Alternergy powers up Tanay wind project ahead of launch

Alternergy Holdings Corp. has reached a major milestone in its flagship Tanay Wind Project, successfully energizing the transmission facilities that will connect the 128-megawatt renewable energy project to the Luzon grid, bringing commercial operations a step closer.

The company said the successful energization of the project’s 500-kilovolt substation and transmission facilities confirms that its electrical systems are ready for integrated testing before the wind farm begins supplying clean electricity to the national grid. The facility is the largest substation Alternergy has built to date.

The milestone is significant not only for the company but also for the country’s renewable energy program. According to Alternergy, the Tanay Wind Project is the first wind farm energized under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program II, marking tangible progress in expanding the country’s clean energy pipeline.

“The successful energization of the Tanay Wind Project brings us another step closer to delivering clean, reliable energy to Filipino consumers,” Alternergy President Gerry Magbanua said.

He added that the project demonstrates how collaboration among government agencies, local governments, host communities, contractors, lenders, and private partners can accelerate the country’s transition to renewable energy.

Beyond its scale, the project also introduces some of the region’s most advanced wind technology. The Tanay facility will use 8-megawatt wind turbines, the largest installed in Southeast Asia outside China, enabling higher electricity output while maximizing available wind resources.

Once fully operational, the wind farm is expected to generate about 283.5 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, enough to supply around 118,000 households while preventing nearly 198,000 metric tons of carbon emissions each year.

The commissioning milestone comes as renewable energy developers race to bring new capacity online amid rising electricity demand and the government’s push to increase the share of renewables in the country’s power mix.

For Alternergy, the Tanay project also advances its target of adding 500 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity in 2026, positioning the company to benefit from the Philippines’ accelerating shift toward cleaner and more diversified power sources.
