The endless chess match: Globe’s multi-layered battle vs evolving digital scams

The fight against digital fraud is an ongoing game of cat and mouse. Every time the telecommunications industry shuts down one pathway for scammers, cybercriminals pivot to find another. As providers successfully block malicious links, spoofed text messages, and SIM-based fraud, fraudsters simply adapt, proving that cybersecurity requires continuous innovation rather than a one-time fix.

Garrett Silao, Globe’s chief information security officer, notes that as traditional defenses strengthen, scammers frequently shift their tactics and platforms. Over the years, Globe has steadily reinforced its network by securing enterprise sender IDs, sniffing out SIM box operations, and using advanced network analytics to drastically reduce traditional SMS-based scams.

However, as these traditional avenues close, criminals have turned to more sophisticated technology, such as illegal IMSI Catchers, or fake cell towers. These devices broadcast a powerful signal that tricks nearby mobile phones into connecting to them instead of legitimate cellular networks, allowing fraudsters to bypass standard security controls entirely. This shift highlights a broader reality: as security measures improve, cybercriminals alter their methods to exploit new vulnerabilities.

To stay ahead of these evolving threats, Globe has deployed a multi-layered defense strategy. This approach combines robust network protection, real-time threat intelligence, and deep collaboration with law enforcement, government agencies, and financial institutions. By sharing data and securing legitimate business messaging channels, Globe can block phishing sites and respond to emerging threats at a much faster pace.

Equally important to this technical wall is human defense. Through consumer initiatives like “Go Safe with Globe,” the “Scam Shield” feature on the GlobeOne app, and ongoing digital literacy campaigns, the company equips Filipinos with the knowledge to spot red flags before damage is done. Silao emphasizes that protecting consumers is a shared responsibility, where technology and public awareness must work hand in hand. Globe continues to invest heavily in its defenses and urges the public to remain vigilant against unsolicited messages, urgent requests for private data, and to report any suspicious activity immediately through official channels.
