At most fun runs, the only thing getting recycled is the promise, “I’ll start training next week.” At the fifth Vermosa Green Run in Cavite, plastic bottles stole the spotlight by proving they deserved a second lap.
More than 2,000 runners, weekend warriors, families and energetic four-legged companions gathered at Ayala Land’s Vermosa estate for an event where breaking a sweat also meant helping the environment.
Participants received registration discounts by donating used PET bottles, which will eventually be turned into eco-bricks for future Ayala Land construction projects. It may be one of the few races where an empty water bottle finishes with a brighter future than its owner.
The green story continued long after the bottles were dropped off. Event singlets, finisher shirts and even the dogs’ colorful bandanas were made entirely from recycled PET bottles, showing that yesterday’s thirst quencher can become tomorrow’s race gear.
“We wanted our runners to experience sustainability both literally and symbolically,” said Lani Tan, General Manager of the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub. “Seeing families, elite athletes, and pet lovers come together shows that our community’s passion for fitness is deeply intertwined with environmental action.”
The event also gave every stride a lasting purpose. Through a partnership with the Haribon Foundation, corporate and group registrations helped fund native tree planting and forest restoration under the Forests for Life Movement.
“Our fifth edition attracted many group registrations, which means hundreds of new native trees will be nurtured because of our runners’ participation,” said Vermosa Marketing Manager Letty Oh-Nañagas.
Proceeds will also benefit Takbo Kabitenyo and Pawssion Project, supporting youth sports, environmental conservation and animal welfare.
The Vermosa Green Run shows that saving the planet does not always require dramatic sacrifices. Sometimes it begins with putting on running shoes, bringing the family dog, recycling a plastic bottle and discovering that doing something good for yourself can also be good for the world.
