Fuel prices set for major rollback, offering much-needed relief to households and businesses

Ordinary consumers and business owners can look forward to substantial savings at the pump this week as local oil companies prepare to roll back pump prices for both gasoline and diesel by as much as P5.00 per liter. The upcoming reduction marks another consecutive week of price cuts, delivering direct financial relief to households managing tight budgets and enterprises battling heavy operating costs.

Leo Bellas, president of Jetti Petroleum, confirmed on Sunday that full five-day trading results from the global market alongside recent foreign exchange averages point to a downward adjustment of P4.50 to P5.00 per liter for gasoline and diesel. This anticipated drop follows a smaller reduction implemented by the Department of Energy last week, where prices fell by P0.73 for gasoline, P0.60 for diesel, and P2.09 for kerosene.

For ordinary consumers, transport operators, and small business owners, any sustained relief at the pump carries significant weight. Transport costs directly influence daily commuting budgets, utility costs, and the price of basic market goods. A steep reduction of P5.00 per liter allows logistics firms and delivery services to lower their daily overhead, helping curb inflationary pressures that trickle down to everyday food items and retail goods.

The shift stems from a sharp decline in international crude benchmarks earlier in the week. Easing shipping conditions in the Middle East, paired with China relaxing its clean product export ban, flooded the regional market with refined fuel and significantly loosened overall supply across Asia. Although global crude prices posted a slight Friday rally—with Brent crude settling at $83.55 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate closing at $78.18—due to continued geopolitical negotiations surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, regional averages remained low enough to secure deep savings for local consumers this week.

Recent Department of Energy data highlights just how critical these adjustments are for the public standard of living. Between July 28 and August 3, average retail pump prices in the National Capital Region hovered around P80.90 per liter for RON 91 gasoline, P90.40 for diesel, and P119.10 for kerosene. Earlier this year, prior to global market disruptions, those same fuel products averaged P53.00 for gasoline, P60.79 for diesel, and P84.67 for kerosene. While local pump prices remain well above early-year benchmarks, this latest price slash gives local commerce and family finances crucial breathing room.
